A comparison of optical buffering technologies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe the practical and fundamental limitations of the more prominent optical buffering approaches. The architectural implementation and needs of an optical packet switch are used as a foundation for the study. We also present initial results for a buffered, all-optical, 40 Gb/s packet switch. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Comparison and Performance of Different Optical Switching Architectures
Optical Packet Switching (OPS) and transmission networks based on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) have been increasingly deployed in the Internet infrastructure over the last decade in order to meet the huge increasing demand for bandwidth. Several different technologies have been developed for optical packet switching such as space switches, broadcast-and-select, input buffered switches...
متن کاملSurvey and Comparison of Optical Switch Fabrication Techniques and Architectures
The main issue in the optical transmission is switching speed. The optical packet switching faces many significant challenges in processing and buffering. The generalized multilevel protocol switching seeks to eliminate the asynchronous transfer mode and synchronous optical network layer, hence the implementation of IP over WDM (wave length division multiplexing). Optical burst switching attemp...
متن کاملAnalisys of the Methods of Preventing of Contention Resolution in Optical Packet Switching Networks
Optical networks evolve fast. Nowadays many technologies of optical networks are using. But there are some restrictions which make limited of the possibilities of the optical networks. Contention Resolution is one of them. There are several technologies of reducing of Contention Resolution. They will be analyzed in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of these technologies will be descr...
متن کاملExact Performance Analysis of a Single-wavelength Optical Buffer with Correlated Inter-arrival Times
Providing a photonic alternative to the current electronic switching in the backbone, optical packet switching (OPS) and optical burst switching (OBS) require optical buffering. Optical buffering exploits delays in long optical fibers; an optical buffer is implemented by routing packets through a set of fiber delay lines (FDLs). Previous studies pointed out that, in comparison with electronic b...
متن کاملOptical pulse compression based on nonlinear silicon waveguides and chirped Bragg gratings
Due to the growing demand for higher bandwidth, employing optical devices instead of electronic devices in data transmission systems has attracted much attention in recent years. Optical switches, modulators and wavelength converters are a few examples of the required optical devices. CMOS compatible fabrication of these devices, leads to much more growing of this technology. Optical pulse comp...
